The Nuremberg Declaration on Peace and Justice
On 13 June 2008 the Governments of Finland, Germany and Jordan have forwarded to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Mr Ban Ki-moon, the final text of the
Nuremberg Declaration on Peace and Justice.
The Declaration was elaborated between July 2007 and April 2008 by a group of international experts from the fields of human rights, conflict resolution and development who were designated by the conference organizers and working under the auspices of peace Nobel Prize laureate President Oscar Arias of Costa Rica. The Declaration builds on the results of the conference, which were presented by Prince Zeid Ra'ad Zeid Al-Hussein at the final plenary session. It contains definitions, principles and recommendations on issues of peace, justice and impunity, dealing with the past and development. Although the Declaration is not a legal document, it aspires to "guide those involved at the local, national and international levels in all phases of conflict transformation, including mediation, post-conflict peace-building, development, and the promotion of transitional justice and the rule of law" and thus to influence the future practice of making and building "just and lasting peace".
